Certificates in Buddhist Studies

Announcement

Our profound yet accessible Buddhist Studies Programs give depth to an understanding of Buddhism in the 21st century world. Designed to accommodate diverse interests and schedules, our courses offer a unique opportunity to unlock and enrich an understanding of this ancient wisdom tradition.


 Option B: Certificate in Buddhist Studies

  • Customize your learning experience by selecting a minimum of 6 courses (two 4-credit courses and four 2-credit courses) from the DBS curriculum. Please check DBS Classes and Schedule below.
  • Active class participation and completion of assignments are required.
  • Those who complete this program earn a Certificate in Buddhist Studies from The American Buddhist Sangha Academy (ABSA). 

Option C: Introduction to Buddhist Studies

  • This introductory option allows you to design your learning experience and explore fundamental concepts and practices at your own pace.

       Option C1: Certificate of Completion from ABSA

  • Completion of a minimum of 3 selected courses from the DBS curriculum. Please check DBS Classes.
  • Active class participation and completion of assignments are required.

       Option C2: Certificate of Participation 

  • Simply select classes from "DBS Classes and Schedule" below, attend classes and immerse yourself in the teachings to receive a Certificate of Participation for classes that you completed.
  • Active class participation is required, and completion of assignments is optional.


These programs are tuition free, and offer:

Credibility - Earn a recognized certificate in Buddhist Studies from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, or the American Buddhist Sangha Academy (ABSA).


Whether you are taking your first steps into the world of Buddhism or seeking to expand your existing knowledge, our programs provide a solid foundation in Buddhist philosophy, history, and practice, through carefully designed curricula and extensively experienced faculty. 


Our programs create a transformative learning experience facilitated by engaging monastic and lay Buddhist teachers. We cultivate a solid foundation of Buddhist knowledge and practice through a comprehensive and systematic presentation of core Buddhist teachings. 


The study programs are designed to foster a supportive and vibrant community of Buddhists, connecting in a meaningful way. Beyond deep study, our programs provide a unique forum for personal growth and spiritual development.

We accept applications on a rolling basis for flexibility and convenience. However, we recommend that you apply at least one month prior to the start date of your desired class to secure your spot. 1. Reading Pāli through the Tipiṭaka

  • Credit: 2 credits (total of 30 contact hours)
  • Dates: Jan 2 – Jan 29, 2026 (20 evenings, Mon–Fri)
  • Time: 8:30 pm – 10:00 pm EST (1.5 hrs per session)
  • Instructor: Bhante Derangala Kusalagnana
  • For course details, please see Course Syllabus below.
  • The course fee of $200 is to be paid upon acceptance into the course.
  • A minimum of 10 students is required to start the course.


2. Introduction to Sanskrit through Classical Texts

  • Credit: 2 credits (total of 30 contact hours)
  • Dates:   June 1 – June 28, 2026 (20 evenings, Mon–Fri)
  • Time:   8:30 pm – 10:00 pm EST (1.5 hrs per session)
  • Instructor:   Bhante Derangala Kusalagnana
  • For  course details, please see Course Syllabus below.
  • The course fee of $200 is to be paid upon acceptance into the course.
  • A minimum of 10 students is required to start the course
